Report to the State

Wednesday, February 18, 2015 was Boy Scout Day in the State of Wisconsin. Bay-Lakes Council was represented by Lodge Chief Preston Podolske and Scout Executive Mark Logemann at the Report to the State. Representatives from the 7 Councils headquartered in Wisconsin met with Attorney General Brad Schimel for about a half hour before meeting with Distinguished Eagle Scout Governor Scott Walker for nearly an hour. Representatives Goyke and Petryk met with the contingent over lunch and the day concluded with a presentation of our report to about 25 members of the Wisconsin State Legislature.  The report brought attention to the over 57,000 youth members and nearly 20,000 adult volunteers who were involved in Scouting last year.  It also recognized the 865 Scouts who earned their Eagle Scout award last year as well as the more than 255,000 hours of service provided by the Scouts, at a value of more than $5.5M

High Adventure Base - The Summit, Council Ambassador

We’re pleased to announce that Jake Paider has agreed to serve as Bay-Lakes Council’s Summit Ambassador.  In this role, he will be a resource for Troops and Crews interested in making a trip to the BSA’s newest High Adventure Base – The Summit.

The Summit, located in Mount Hope, West Virginia, near Beckley, is one of four facilities managed by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The Summit is the permanent home of the National Scout jamboree, The Summit High Adventure Base, and the National Center for Scouting Excellence. It is 10,600 acres in size.

A wide variety of experiences are available for groups to select from.  Jake is a Venture Leader for Crew 9140 in Brussels, WI and took his Crew on the Summit Experience in 2014.  It is a program that lets you try all The Summit’s high adventure activities–BMX, skateboarding, mountain biking, zip lines, canopy tours, challenge courses, climbing, shooting sports and more–in one setting.

Should you have an interest in learning more about the opportunities at The Summit contact Jake at jpaider@belsonco.com or C – 920-655-3886 or visit The Summit webpage at www.summitbsa.org.

New Museum Inventory

The museum just became the owner of a very unique Scout Handbook and less than 200 were given. It’s a special re-bound 1910 Scout Handbook which were given at an event on September 23rd, 1910 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in which Baden Powell was in attendance. By the cover you really can’t tell how special the book is. This book is extra special because it was also given to Gilbert Nelson Jerome, as you can see in the pictures. Gilbert lived from November 15, 1889 until July 11, 1918. Jerome was also the Scout Executive for New Haven from August 1915 until June 1917. He resigned from his position to join the U.S. Aviation Service. After his death a “Gilbert N. Jerome Lecture course for Scout Leaders” was established in his memory.

This is a very valuable addition to the BLC Scout Museum will be on display at the 2nd annual Trade-O-Ree and at a few other events during this coming year.
